In 1888 the discovery at Canterbury of a skeleton whose skull had seemingly been cleft by a sword opened up a fierce controversy as to the fate of Thomas Becket’s remains, previously thought to have been burnt during the Reformation. New discoveries in 1990 reopened the debate.
