How to order this book

The Golden Haggadah is one of the outstanding works among the British Library’s world-renowned collection of Hebrew manuscripts. The Haggadah, a type of prayer book, is the order of service for the celebration of Passover-Eve in the home. Traditionally the most richly decorated and illuminated of all Jewish prayerbooks, Haggadah means literally “narration” and tells the story of the divine deliverance of the children of Israel from Egyptian bondage. It lends itself naturally to colourful illustration — the detail of the story itself, and the Passover meal and ritual all provide material on which the artist can exercise his skill.

Written and illuminated in Northern Spain, probably Barcelona, in around 1320, the Golden Haggadah is a superb example of a Spanish style of Haggadah, opening with several full-page illustrations narrating the story of Exodus and the Passover ritual. This highly illustrated account of the manuscript’s creation and history reproduces all the major illustrations in colour and provides an accessible introduction to Hebrew manuscript art as well as an authoritative commentary on the Golden Haggadah’s content and illustrative scheme.
