This is the first book devoted to the lives of women in Wales before the Industrial Revolution, and the first study for any period to deal with the history of shifting gender identities in Wales.
This innovative collection analyses how people’s lives were shaped by notions of appropriate male and female behaviour from the later middle ages down to the eve of the Industrial Revolution. It examines such issues as why so few women seem to have contributed to the poetic tradition; how attitudes towards magic and bewitchment differed in Wales from elsewhere; what women contributed to the emerging nonconformist movements; how the Acts of Union affected the political and social responsibilities of men in Wales; and how we might explore women’s experiences across a range of historical sources, from the records of the law courts, to the work of the embroiderer’s needle.
Contents:
