Case study
Raptor the Avenger
Raptor the Avenger was the third and final book in the award-winning Small Vampires series, a trilogy of books aimed at children and young adults, and as with the previous books, Medievalbookshop was hired to produce the design and layout.
This page gives attention to three particular elements of the process:
- a full-colour cover designed to give prominence to a painting by Rob Rayevsky;
- a series of monochrome illustrations, utilising stock art, to be placed opposite the first page of each chapter; and
- typesetting of the text pages themselves.The brief was to keep the look and feel of the previous two books, so the same typefaces were used, and the style of the chapter-front illustrations was broadly similar, though with some playful variations. The cover design used a template distilled from the two previous volumes, but introduced several none-too-subtle variations, in keeping with the client’s wish to show a chronological progression to the series.
The final files were produced as a print-ready PDF for production of a hardback edition of the book, and as a web-ready PDF for ebook downloads.
