Covers the period 1400-approx. 1600, the focus being on the European and Islamic worlds, but with a liberal sprinkling of significant personalities from elsewhere. Contains 211 essays arranged alphabetically, average around 3 or 4 pages each; each is organised into the sections “Early life”, “Life’s work”, and “Summary”, and is followed by a brief bibliography.
