How to order this book

Historical fiction: as Ahmed, former servant of Ja’far, lies dying, he decides to tell the story of his master’s life, over ten consecutive evenings. The old man becomes known to his listeners as ‘The Grand Vizier of the Night’. In 785 AD Harun al‑Rachid becomes Caliph and falls in love with Ja’far, who in turn is in love with Harun’s sister. Harun decrees that they may marry but not consummate, but they defy him and produce male twins. The novel treats of the courtly ideal in its Oriental manifestation, but is run through with a persistent streak of cruelty, particularly in the hunting and battle scenes, and in the conduct of man toward woman…
